The Fault in Our Stars (Hardcover) John Green
Amazon Best Books of the Month,
January 2012:
In The Fault in Our Stars , John Green has created a
soulful novel that tackles big
subjects--life, death, love--with the
perfect blend of levity and heart-
swelling emotion. Hazel is sixteen,
with terminal cancer, when she meets
Augustus at her kids-with-cancer
support group. The two are kindred
spirits, sharing an irreverent sense of
humor and immense charm, and
watching them fall in love even as
they face universal questions of the
human condition--How will I be
remembered? Does my life, and will
my death, have meaning?--has a raw
honesty that is deeply moving. --Seira
Wilson
From Booklist
*Starred Review* At 16, Hazel Grace
Lancaster, a three-year stage IV–
cancer survivor, is clinically
depressed. To help her deal with this,
her doctor sends her to a weekly
support group where she meets
Augustus Waters, a fellow cancer
survivor, and the two fall in love. Both
kids are preternaturally intelligent,
and Hazel is fascinated with a novel
about cancer called An Imperial
Affliction. Most particularly, she longs
to know what happened to its
characters after an ambiguous ending.
To find out, the enterprising Augustus
makes it possible for them to travel to
Amsterdam, where Imperial’s author,
an expatriate American, lives. What
happens when they meet him must be
left to readers to discover. Suffice it to
say, it is significant. Writing about
kids with cancer is an invitation to
sentimentality and pathos—or worse,
in unskilled hands, bathos. Happily,
Green is able to transcend such
pitfalls in his best and most ambitious
novel to date. Beautifully conceived
and executed, this story artfully
examines the largest possible
considerations—life, love, and death—
with sensitivity, intelligence, honesty,
and integrity. In the process, Green
shows his readers what it is like to
live with cancer, sometimes no more
than a breath or a heartbeat away from
death. But it is life that Green
spiritedly celebrates here, even while
acknowledging its pain. In its every
aspect, this novel is a triumph. HIGH-
DEMAND BACKSTORY: Green’s
promotional genius is a force of
nature. After announcing he would sign
all 150,000 copies of this title’s first
print run, it shot to the top of Amazon
and Barnes & Noble’s best-seller lists
six months before publication. Grades
9-12. --Michael Cart

Song of Ice and Fire, (4 Vols.): A Game of Thrones / A Clash of Kings / A Storm of Swords / A Feast for Crows (Mass Market Paperback) George R. R. Martin
Review
'A Game of Thrones grabs hold and
won't let go. It's brilliant.' Robert
Jordan 'Colossal, staggering! Martin
captures all the intoxicating
complexity of the Wars of the Roses or
Imperial Rome in his imaginary world!
one of the greats of fantasy literature.'
SFX 'Fantasy literature has never
shied away from grandeur, but the
sheer-mind-boggling scope of this
epic has sent other fantasy writers
away shaking their heads! Its
ambition: to construct the Twelve
Caesars of fantasy fiction, with
characters so venomous they could
eat the Borgias.' Guardian 'Such a
splendid tale. I couldn't stop till I'd
finished and it was dawn.' Anne
McCaffrey
Product Description
George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice
and Fire series has become, in many
ways, the gold standard for modern
epic fantasy. Martin--dubbed the
"American Tolkien" by Time
magazine--has created a world that is
as rich and vital as any piece of
historical fiction, set in an age of
knights and chivalry and filled with a
plethora of fascinating,
multidimensional characters that you
love, hate to love, or love to hate as
they struggle for control of a divided
kingdom. It is this very vitality that
has led it to be adapted as the HBO
miniseries "Game of Thrones."
This boxed set includes the following
novels:
A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows

Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth
Release date: July 16, 2013
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
From the internationally bestselling
author of No god but God comes a
fascinating, provocative, and
meticulously researched biography
that challenges long-held
assumptions about the man we know
as Jesus of Nazareth.
Two thousand years ago, an itinerant
Jewish preacher and miracle worker
walked across the Galilee, gathering
followers to establish what he called
the “Kingdom of God.” The
revolutionary movement he launched
was so threatening to the established
order that he was captured, tortured,
and executed as a state criminal.
Within decades after his shameful
death, his followers would call him
God.
Sifting through centuries of
mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new
light on one of history’s most
influential and enigmatic characters
by examining Jesus through the lens
of the tumultuous era in which he
lived: first-century Palestine, an age
awash in apocalyptic fervor. Scores of
Jewish prophets, preachers, and
would-be messiahs wandered through
the Holy Land, bearing messages from
God. This was the age of zealotry—a
fervent nationalism that made
resistance to the Roman occupation a
sacred duty incumbent on all Jews.
And few figures better exemplified this
principle than the charismatic
Galilean who defied both the imperial
authorities and their allies in the
Jewish religious hierarchy.
Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels
against the historical sources, Aslan
describes a man full of conviction and
passion, yet rife with contradiction; a
man of peace who exhorted his
followers to arm themselves with
swords; an exorcist and faith healer
who urged his disciples to keep his
identity a secret; and ultimately the
seditious “King of the Jews” whose
promise of liberation from Rome went
unfulfilled in his brief lifetime. Aslan
explores the reasons why the early
Christian church preferred to
promulgate an image of Jesus as a
peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a
politically conscious revolutionary.
And he grapples with the riddle of how
Jesus understood himself, the mystery
that is at the heart of all subsequent
claims about his divinity.
Zealot yields a fresh perspective on
one of the greatest stories ever told
even as it affirms the radical and
transformative nature of Jesus of
Nazareth’s life and mission. The
result is a thought-provoking,
elegantly written biography with the
pulse of a fast-paced novel: a
singularly brilliant portrait of a man, a
time, and the birth of a religion.
Praise for Zealot
“Aslan brings a fine popular style,
shorn of all jargon, to bear on the
presentation of Jesus of Nazareth. . . .
You don’t have to lose your religion to
learn much that’s vitally germane to
its history from Aslan’s absorbing,
reader-friendly book.” — Booklist
(starred review)
“Be advised, dear reader, Sunday
school this isn’t. Yet Aslan may come
as close as one can to respecting
those who revere Jesus as the peace-
loving, turn-the-other-cheek, true son
of God depicted in modern Christianity,
even as he knocks down that
image.” — The Seattle Times
“[Aslan’s] literary talent is as
essential to the effect of Zealot: The
Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth
as are his scholarly and journalistic
chops. . . . A vivid, persuasive portrait
of the world and societies in which
Jesus lived and the role he most likely
played in both.” —Salon
“Compulsively readable and written at
a popular level, this superb work is
highly recommended.” — Publishers

Inferno: A Novel (Robert Langdon)
Inferno: A Novel (Robert Langdon)
(Kindle Edition)
Dan Brown
Product Description
Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: Inside Inferno
Explore the sights of Inferno
alongside Robert Langdon in this
exclusive first look at Dan Brown's
latest thriller.
As Langdon continued on toward the
elbow of the square, he could
see, directly ahead in the distance, the
shimmering blue glass dial of the
St. Mark’s Clock Tower—the same
astronomical clock through which
James Bond had thrown a villain in
the film Moonraker .
The Tetrarchs statue was well known
for its missing foot, broken
off while it was being plundered from
Constantinople in the thirteenth
century. Miraculously, in the 1960s,
the foot was unearthed in Istanbul.
Venice petitioned for the missing
piece of statue, but the Turkish
authorities
replied with a simple message: You
stole the statue—we’re keeping our
foot.
Amid a contour of spires and domes, a
single illuminated facade dominated
Langdon’s field of view. The building
was an imposing stone fortress
with a notched parapet and a three-
hundred-foot tower that swelled
near the top, bulging outward into a
massive machicolated battlement.
Langdon found himself standing before
a familiar face—that of Dante Alighieri.
Depicted in the legendary fresco by
Michelino, the great poet stood before
Mount Purgatory and held forth in his
hands, as if in humble offering,
his masterpiece The Divine Comedy.

About the Author:
I've always been a lover of writing,
but mostly dabbled in creating poetry
while raising my three beautiful
children. I am grateful my husband of
fifteen years has supported me—albeit
sometimes kicking and screaming—
as I pursue this "hobby" of mine.
Without his help, writing would be an
impossible endeavor. In late June
2012, I felt an urgent tug of my pen,
and I began writing one of my first
novels, Collide. Although I thought it
might never see the light of day, it
gave me the courage to plunge
headfirst onto a path I had never
considered before.
